When reaching Puerto Montt we suggest visiting the Main Square, the Cathedral, Diego Rivera Art House, and the Monument to German Colonization, the Jesuit Church, and the Patrimonial Houses of the city’s downtown. Towards the west you will encounter one of the most attractive and traditional places of Puerto Montt: Angelmo’s fishing cove, where is located the Artisan Fair and Angelmo’s market, characterized by its architecture of “Stilt houses”. From there you can cross in ferryboats or boats to Tenglo Island, whose summit provides a panoramic view of the city, the mountain chain and Osorno, Calbuco and Tronador volcanoes.
Follow Route 7 and enjoy the Carretera Austral, going across one of the most rough and lush geographic areas in the world. You can go for a horseback ride, practice mountain climbing, trekking, mountain bike, photography, high alps, fishing, among others. We suggest having a good gasoline supply, since after leaving Puerto Montt you will only be able to load up on gasoline in Hornopirén; Chaitén; La Junta; Mañihuales; and Coyhaique.
When reaching Chaitén you will discover a commune in the middle of beautiful landscape and woods. At approximately 10 kilometers to the northeast of the city is the Chaitén Volcano, known for the eruption that occurred on May 1st, 2008. Visit the Amarillo Thermal Baths, which are the entrance to Pumalín Park. Its trail s will take you to Michimahuida volcano or Yelcho Glaciar. Not to be missed are Yelcho Lake and snowdrift “el Amarillo”, which can only be accessed on foot.
When it comes to nautical sports, Futaleufú is your destination. This zone is one of the favorites for kayak and rafting lovers all across the globe. In its lakes you can also practice fly fishing. Espolón Lake is a highlight of this zone. Through Futaleufú it is possible to access Argentinean territory on the international route Trevilin. The Futaleufú River is famous all over the world thanks to its Class V rapids and its excellent fishing. The existing flora and fauna in the Futaleufú National Reserve will simply dazzle you.
In Palena, navigation on the river of the same name is a must-see for those who enjoy action. Lago Palena National Reserve has a privileged landscape, dominated by high summits, icecaps and a wood of lenga trees reaching up to the cold waters of the lake. In Palena there is an international route to Argentina called Río Encuentro, suitable for all types of vehicles.
